My perfect week includes social interaction, exercise, creative projects and some forward motion towards one of my personal goals.
Relationships are what defines how happy and healthy we are. Research shows the power of close relationships is crucial to our longevity, comparing loneliness to the equivalent of smoking 15 cigarettes. So I like to go for a coffee with a friend on one of my days off work, often followed by a long walk usually with Mel Robbins in my ears. I believe in surrounding yourself with positive people and this includes podcasts and books.
Exercise is important for my mental health. I like to get a walk most days. I also have a swimming class once a week that I joined nervously in the hope of gaining some confidence and years on, it’s a wonderful blend of everything – the exercise, social aspect and the sense of personal achievement.
Mental exercise which I see as learning and reflecting, is vital for a happy week. For me it’s mainly journalling, reading non fiction and studying.
if I get time to bake something it’s even better. I like how my brain calms when I’m getting lost in creating a tasty treat. Anxiety doesn’t exist while I’m in that flow.
So if I can get a few walks, see some friends and family, go swimming, get some precious solitude to read, write, bake a little.. I’m pretty happy.. And I can do more for other people when I’m happy too. I’m simply a better me when I get my basic happiness recipe in.
